Imported From Hungary
During the past few years, Suzuki has been "decentralising" the production of their products, by importing a number of models from other countries. It started with the Splash back in 2008, then the SX4 S Cross in early 2015. The Vitara comes as part of that strategy.
It appears that Suzuki will go ahead with this strategy for years to come, as they've confirmed that they will be importing the Baleno hatchback from India starting from next year.
Engine and Transmission Options
The Escudo is currently offered with only a single engine choice, the 1.6litre petrol engine, mated to a single choice of transmission, a six speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
The engine is equipped with an auto start stop system called "Idling Stop", which increases fuel efficiency and lowers CO2 emission.
An all wheel drive system dubbed ALLGRIP is also available as an option.
ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS
Engine type: M16A 1.6L DOHC 16 valve VVT with idling stop

Product Positioning
Just like how Suzuki still sells the Grand Vitara in several markets while also selling the smaller All New Vitara, Suzuki Japan has also continued selling the larger old Escudo, now called Escudo 2.4, alongside the smaller new Escudo.
In the Japanese Domestic Market, the new Escudo slots below the Escudo 2.4, and above the SX4 S Cross, launched earlier in 2015.
